I think in a way Tony Stark was always meant to die. He is a very haunted character and he’s a futurist. That’s what makes him haunted. His level of brilliance, it’s like a seer who can see into the future, and see disaster always on the horizon. He’s made a lot of complex choices over the years to try to stave off disaster. If you know that is who Tony Stark is essentially, and it’s been an arc we’ve been setting up since Civil War, the only way for Tony to be at peace is to solve the problem, which he does. It was more about Tony making the sacrifice play in a lot of ways you’d assume Cap would. It’s surprising that it’s Tony. It’s also surprising because he has a wife and a child. That makes it more painful. It1& al9o exceedingly heroic of him. Tony has been conflicted between his own ego and his ability to be a hero and whether he should be a family man or Iron Man. That was a really interesting choice to make and something that would complete him.”
